Gothic Chapbook Illustrations

主讲人:Kwinten Van De Walle

时间:6月5日(周四)14:50-16:20

地点:松江校区五教楼5361

讲座简介

This lecture will introduce students to the historical print form of the chapbook.  A highly versatile print medium, the chapbook was particularly suited for the dissemination of popular reading to a broad and diverse readership.  Gothic chapbooks or bluebooks, within this context, capitalised on the popularity of the Gothic in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century and made it more cheaply and more easily available than conventional editions of Gothic novels.  Many of these Gothic chapbooks featured frontispiece illustrations.  Adopting a visual-material methodology, this lecture will discuss the frontispieces included in the Gothic bluebooks published by Thomas and Robert Hughes in 1807 and 1808.  It will explore the ways in which the depiction and interpretation of Gothic horror and terror function as visual reflections on the genre of the Gothic, framing and affecting the reading experience.
